Tony Clough is the Clinical Director of Sharrow Dental Care, Advent and Springfield Dental Care; under his guidance the group has grown and developed into the largest and most influential oral health service provider in Essex, operating across three sites in Chelmsford.

Dr Clough served for 24 years as a Postgraduate dental tutor, while combining this role with teaching at the Royal London Hospital dental school, the University of Essex and coordinating the Diploma in Sports Dentistry course at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute in London. He also continues as the elected representative of the 1500 dentists in Essex, having fulfilled the role for 16 years.

Tony is joined within the practice by his two sons, Frank and Tom, his nephew, Anthony Barrett, and daughter-in-law, Pip Clough.

Through his involvement in sports dentistry, Dr Clough currently works with the British Boxing team, providing advice, protective equipment and dental care as required. He has acted as Dental Advisor on behalf of the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission in every Olympic games since Beijing 2008.

In recognition of his expertise, Dr Clough has hosted Dental Workshops for Sports Physicians during the last two “IOC Forums on Health and Injury in Sport”. He is a contributing author to both the FIFA and IOC Sport Medicine Diploma programs, and recently co-authored a major review of Dental Injuries in Sport for the Medical Clinics of North America. He continues to lecture widely including the Middle East AEEDEC (Dubai) Conference and recently for the Advanced Sports Physician FIMS / FIFA course in Portugal in September 2017.

Clinically, Tony is responsible for undertaking much of the complicated surgery within the Practice including implant surgery and bone grafting procedures.

His main interests are:

  • Prosthetic reconstruction using dental implants;
  • Trauma surgery – immediate and long-term management;
  • Joint cases combining orthodontic and restorative aspects;
  • General aesthetic dental work to give his patients their beautiful smiles back!

Tony has a particular interest in the field of dental traumatology and through his affiliation with sports teams and athletes, he has garnered a wealth of experience over the years in managing dental trauma in the immediate aftermath, through to rehabilitation and long-term follow-up.

DR Thomas Clough BDS(LOND) MJDF RCS ENG PGCERT DENTED BEDS

Tom is the practice principal at both Springfield Dental Practice and also Advent Dental Practice. He is responsible for the new redevelopment of Advent and has moved to this new site, no longer working at Sharrow.

Tom has extensive experience in cosmetic dentistry and can talk you through a wide range of dental treatments to improve aesthetics including tooth whitening or crowns and veneers. Tom uses Clear Correct as his clear aligner system to straighten teeth, this is a more affordable system than Invisalign and is used for simple cases of tooth straightening.

Tom is currently undertaking his Diploma in Implant Dentistry with the Royal College of Surgeons and has been placing implants for 6 years.

Tom is known for his good humour in an environment that many patients perceive as stressful, helping to re-assure nervous patients with a cheesy grin.

Nihar Patel: BDS (Lond) MFDS RCS DipImpDent RCS Pgcert

Nihar graduated from The Royal London with distinction in 2011, after which he completed vocational training in Essex and obtained first prize in the prestigious end of year case presentation in the East of England deanery. Nihar went on to obtain MFDS from the Royal College of Surgeons. He has been placing implants for 7 years and undertook 3 years of Implant Training at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London.

Along with Implant dentistry and oral surgery, he also enjoys providing comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry and has undertaken many cosmetic dentistry courses in the UK and abroad. Nihar is also an accredited Invisalign provider providing orthodontics of patients of all ages, and a keen believer in the Align, Bleach, Bond concept for minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry.

His aim is to provide his patients with high quality care in a calm, laid back and pain free manner. Nihar believes education never stops and intends to continue further post-graduate training in both restorative and implant dentistry as he strives to be at the forefront of cutting-edge dentistry. Nihar is a member of the International Team of Implantology, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and the British Dental Association.

Vishal Barot: BDS (Lond) PGCert (Ortho)

Vishal recently graduated from Barts & The London with the Dean’s Prize of Outstanding Achievement and Best Overall Student. He went on to complete his vocational training in Kent and is now looking to establish himself in the heart of Essex.

He is looking to build positive experiences for his patient through education and prevention. Vishal strongly believes in a personalised approach to dental care where both dentist and patient work towards a common goal through shared decision making.

Outside work you can find Vishal either at the gym or playing cricket, badminton, tennis, table tennis, to name a few!

Harriet Jones: BDS(BRIS) MJDF

Harriet graduated from the University of Bristol with a distinction in oral surgery and oral medicine. She completed her vocational training in London and was awarded first prize in the South West London Deanery’s end of year case presentation. Since then, Harriet has successfully passed the Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties examination with the Royal College of Surgeons.

After working in a practice in London, Harriet joined the Sharrow team in 2018. Harriet enjoys all aspects of dentistry including oral surgery, restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. She offers a range of dental treatments, such as tooth alignment, composite bonding, implants and whitening. She is increasingly using the most up-to-date digital technology to provide the best care and experience for her patients.
Harriet employs a holistic approach to dentistry to both tackle her patients’ immediate needs but also to provide them with the knowledge and skillset to prevent dental problems arising in the future.

Aside from dentistry she enjoys all sports. She plays competitive hockey and tennis and is a keen skier and sailor. She also thoroughly enjoys all aspects of art, cooking and travel.

Philippa Clough: BSC(HONS)EQ SCI EQDT FDSC ORAL HEALTH SCIENCES BSC (HONS) ORAL HEALTH SCIENCES

Pip is a diligent member of the team, working alongside the dentists to provide tailored advice to support and motivate individuals to maintain excellent oral hygiene and dental care.

Pip has always had an interest in dentistry and qualified as an equine dentist in the USA, working with colleagues in the USA and Europe. Pip has since retrained to work within human dentistry fields, qualifying as a hygienist in 2012 with the Outstanding Achievement Award and the BSDHT award for Critical Appraisal and Research Skills. She strives to maintain and build her knowledge and has subsequently qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2016 to gain the skills to further support the dentists by performing restorative and preventative treatments on adults and children.

In her spare time Pip enjoys being a new mother to her two young children and spending time with her horses competing across the South East within British Eventing.

Debbie Gadd: Dip DH, FAETCert

Debbie qualified from the Eastman Dental Hospital (London) in September 1993 as a Dental Hygienist. She went to work in general dental practice in both the NHS and the private sector. In 1996, she began a two year course to obtain her Further and Adult Education Teaching Certificate, where upon she went back to the Eastman to work as a tutor hygienist in the School of Dental Hygiene. In 2005, after the birth of Debbie’s second child, she made the decision to work part time, working three days at the New Advent Surgery.

Outside of work Debbie very much enjoy the outdoors. With an assortment of poultry, horses, and dogs, this keeps her very busy, besides the three children!
She also very much enjoys gardening, playing tennis, walking and just about anything that gets her outside!

Amanda Harbrow- Harris ORAL HEALTH SCIENCE BSC

Amanda graduated from the University of Essex with a Distinction in 2014.
She has worked in dentistry since 1995 in a different capacity as a Dental Nurse. Although she relished her role and exhausted all options of nursing including working in Dubai for 4 years she always had aspirations of being a Hygienist.

Since qualifying she has gone from strength to strength in her career. Her latest achievement is to be the 2019 National Dental Awards ‘Hygienist of the Year’.
Amanda does a lot of voluntary work and enjoys giving talks to health care assistant’s local hospices helping to keep their palliative care patients feel more comfortable.

She works well with nervous patients and soon makes them feel at ease with her friendly nature, they often leave their appointment with a restored faith in dentistry.

Amanda likes to keep abreast of all the latest research and techniques and attends many courses throughout the year.
She is a local girl and lives a stone’s throw away from the practice. In her spare time she enjoys cycling, travelling and socialising with friends and family. She also has 2 cats and is newly married.

Sophie Mayes – FdSc Oral Health Science

Sophie began her time at Sharrow Dental Care on placement as a Student Dental Hygienist. Upon completion of her studies in 2020, Sophie was welcomed back by Mr Clough and now works across both Sharrow and Advent dental practices.

Sophie takes pride in providing a high standard of care. Adopting a methodical, educational and holistic approach in treating periodontal (gum) disease by working with her patients to achieve the best clinical outcomes.
